![]() *** Water Vapor, Killer of Engines (Image/Evans Waterless Coolant) Here are the major causes of cooling system failures and how Evans Waterless Coolant prevents them from happening. that are stored for extended periods of time. That makes it perfect for virtually any vehicle on the road, but is especially ideal for race cars and vehicles like classic cars, street rods, muscle cars, etc. Since it has no water, Evans Coolant is non-corrosive, stops electrolysis, prevents cavitation, and will last the life of the engine with no need for additives or regular coolant replacement. The resulting corrosion, cavitation, and electrolysis issues eventually reduce cooling system efficiency and shorten the life of radiators, water pumps, thermostats, seals, and gaskets.Įvans Waterless Coolant has a patented, glycol-based formula that provides excellent protection at high temperatures compared to traditional water-based coolants. Water in the cooling system also degrades the metals in its components, usually from the inside out. Overheating is the most common cause of engine down-time and is responsible for over a third of catastrophic engine failures. That can cause the coolant to vaporize at normal operating temperatures, leading to overheating and boil-over. Water has excellent heat transfer capabilities, but the typical 50/50 mix of coolant and water has a low boiling point, very close to most engines’ operating temperature. While these water-based coolants do a good job of keeping engine temperatures in check, they fall short when it comes to protection at high operating temperatures and over long periods of time. ![]() If these parts are plastic on your machine and you ride in extreme conditions for long periods of time, replace the plastic parts with metal ones.Since the 1930s, hot rodders and performance car enthusiasts have relied on engine coolants made from a mix of ethylene glycol, water, and corrosion inhibitors. With waterless coolant, the engine will continue to run fine with restricted airflow, although it is possible that the plastic parts in the cooling system, such as the pump impeller or fittings holding the radiator hoses together, can melt. If you don’t let the engine cool down or refill it, you will damage the engine. In long, hard races where the terrain is muddy, it is possible that mud can get packed into the radiators and restrict airflow and engine cooling. It can’t, however, retain its lifetime use with water added and will go bad within a few years. Evans Coolant will still protect with up to 60 percent water. A waterless coolant that meets the ASTM standards can have up to 10-percent water and still retain its anti-corrosion properties. ![]() Many waterless coolants, including Evans’ old formula, would corrode with an addition of only 3-percent water. So before making a purchase of waterless coolant, make sure it meets the ASTM standards to ensure you are investing in a high-performance product. The ASTM, the organization that sets the bar in over 12,000 technical standards worldwide, has a waterless-coolant standard. With water added, it will behave just like regular coolant and lose the waterless-coolant benefits. You can add water or regular coolant to the system with no issues. If you have waterless coolant in your system and it is low and you didn’t bring extra waterless coolant to the track, don’t worry. It must be said that if there is residual water still in the system (over 3 to 5 percent), vapor pressure will build. There is moderate pressure build-up from a 7-percent fluid expansion, so if you open the radiator cap when the coolant is hot, it may spill out a few tablespoons, but it doesn’t have the vapor pressure that can blow up in your face like regular coolant. Waterless coolant doesn’t build vapor pressure in the system. Stable additives are added to the waterless coolant so the coolant never goes bad, whether it is used or still sitting in the container, so it never has to be replaced. ![]() Waterless coolant additives do not fall out of solution as with regular coolant. Instead of expanding when frozen, like water does, without the water, the coolant actually decreases in volume. The boiling point of waterless coolant is 375 degrees Fahrenheit and it freezes at -40 degrees Fahrenheit. They let us in on some secrets, good and bad, on the effects of waterless coolant. There are a few waterless coolant companies on the market, but only one markets worldwide and is highly involved in the motocross industry. ![]() Waterless coolant is made up of the same basic glycols as regular coolant but operates much differently without the water. Let’s state the obvious: waterless coolant is different from regular coolant because there is no water in it. ![]()

![]() Do not heat so vigorously that the entire sample boils away. The purpose of this step is to expunge the air originally present in the capillary tube and replace it with the sample's vapor. Continue heating until a vigorous stream of bubbles emerges from the tip of the capillary tube (Figure 6.25d), such that individual bubbles can barely be distinguished.Studies of this method\(^7\) have determined that it is best to heat the oil gently and in a continual manner, as stopping and starting have caused the results to suffer. It is okay to continue heating a Thiele tube if bubbles are seen. If the oil is not subsequently changed, the sample may boil when heated in the tube. In this method, the rubber band occasionally breaks causing the sample to fall into the oil and contaminate it. Although bubbles should not be seen in the Thiele tube as it warms, they commonly are seen if the tube had been used previously for boiling point determinations. This method is an excellent way to indirectly and slowly heat the sample. The cooler, denser oil will sink, thereby creating a current as shown in Figure 6.25c). If the melting point of the mixture is the same as that of the known compound, then the known and the unknown are most likely identical. A small portion of a known compound, whose melting point is known, is mixed with the unknown compound. As the oil warms and becomes less dense, it will rise and travel up the triangular portion of the tube. A mixture melting point is useful in determining the identity of your unknown compound. Heat the oil gently on the side arm of the Thiele tube with a microburner if available, or Bunsen burner using a back and forth motion (Figure 6.25c).The thermometer should not touch the sides of the glass, and if it does it should be clamped in such a way that it no longer touches. The rubber band should be higher than the top of the mineral oil (Figure 6.25b), keeping in mind that the oil may expand somewhat during heating. Place the rubber stopper and thermometer assembly into the Thiele tube, adjusting the height so that the sample is midway (if possible) inside the tube (Figure 6.25a).Insert a capillary tube into the sample (the same type that is used for melting points), open end down and sealed end up (Figure 6.24d).įigure 6.25: a) Insertion of the assembly into the Thiele tube, b) Rubber band is above the oil, c) Heating, d) Vigorous bubbling of sample. ![]() The Thiele tube may also be used to determine boiling points, by using a liquid sample instead of a solid sample.\( \newcommand\) of sample (Figure 6.24c). By using different oils, different temperature ranges can be reached and used to determine melting points. The sample is placed in the opening in a capillary tube alongside a mercury thermometer and allowed to be heated by the oil as it circulates through the Thiele tube. The control panel might have buttons that allow the start and end of the melting point range to be recorded.Ī Thiele tube is a glass instrument that is filled with oil that is heated by using an open flame. Some machines have several channels, which permit more than one sample to be tested at a time. The temperature range that is determined can then be averaged to gain the melting point of the sample being examined.Īpparatuses usually have a control panel that allows the starting and final temperatures, as well as the temperature gradient (in units per minute), to be programmed. The operator of the apparatus records the temperature range starting with the initial phase-change temperature and ending with the completed phase-change temperature. In it, Kelly mentioned that the peeler she actually wanted to buy me was, as she put it, “the world’s greatest,” but the company that sold it to her a few years ago no longer carries it, and she couldn’t find another online retailer. Inside that third envelope, however, was… Inside that envelope was… another envelope (this one was padded)! Inside the envelope was… another envelope. A few weeks later, she sent a message saying that it was harder to find the peeler than she had thought it would be, but she was working on it. She had noticed that, on a couple occasions (including here and here), I had mentioned how crappy my vegetable peeler was, and she wanted to send me a present – a new vegetable peeler that she loves and thought I’d love, too! What a thoughtful and generous gesture! I gave her an address, and she set out to get the peeler that she wanted to send me.
